A chemical peel is a treatment that applies an acid solution to the skin to loosen and shed its top layers. As the old layer comes away, a new one forms, which can help with uneven tone, rough texture, acne and marks. A chemical peel in Pune at The Skin Firm starts with a skin assessment at our clinic in Mohammed Wadi, NIBM, because the right acid, strength and number of sessions depend on your skin, not on a menu.
Peels are grouped by depth. Superficial (light) peels work on the outermost layer and heal in days. Medium and deep peels go further, need longer healing and carry more risk, so using one is a decision for a doctor's assessment. Most cosmetic concerns are approached with superficial peels, repeated as a short course.
A peel isn't a cure-all. It works on the surface. Deeper marks, pitted scars and many cases of melasma need other treatments alongside it, and sun protection matters throughout.
Active acne and post-acne marks
Pigmentation and uneven skin tone
Tanning and sun-affected skin
Dull, rough or uneven skin texture
Fine lines and early signs of ageing
Enlarged-looking pores and oily skin
Your peel is planned at a consultation. We look at your skin type and tone, the concern you want treated, how your skin has reacted to acids, retinoids or procedures before, and anything that raises risk, such as recent sun exposure, a tendency to dark marks or keloid scars, or medicines you take.
Dr. Karishma Singh, Founder and Skin & Aesthetic Specialist (BHMS, FCHD), leads aesthetic treatment planning at the clinic. Dr. Monica C., Consultant Dermatologist (MD Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy; NMC-registered), reviews medical concerns and prescribes where a prescription treatment is needed.
Peels on deeper skin tones need particular care, because irritation can leave dark marks. The American Academy of Dermatology advises people with skin of colour to see a dermatologist with specific experience treating darker skin tones, and we plan peel strength and spacing with that in mind. Its chemical peel FAQs list the questions worth asking before any peel.
Skin Consultation & Assessment
We examine your skin and ask about your concern, current routine, past peels or procedures, medicines and sun exposure. Peels aren't suitable for everyone, and we'll tell you if yours isn't.
Choosing the Peel
Based on your skin type and concern, we choose the acid, the strength and the number of sessions. Some skin does better with two to four weeks of gentle home preparation first.
The Peel
Your skin is cleansed and the solution is applied for a timed period, then neutralised or removed as that peel requires. You may feel tingling, warmth or stinging. A session usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Aftercare & Review
You get written aftercare and sun-protection advice, and a review visit to check healing. Peels are usually repeated as a course, and we adjust the plan to how your skin responds.
Acne Peels
Salicylic acid dissolves oil, so it is often chosen for oily, breakout-prone skin. It is used alongside an acne routine, not instead of one. See our acne treatment page.
Brightening & Pigmentation Peels
Mandelic, lactic and glycolic acids loosen surface pigment, and the acid and strength are chosen for your skin tone. Gentler acids are often preferred on Indian skin to limit irritation. Melasma needs a careful, low-irritation approach; see our pigmentation and melasma page.
Texture & Anti-Ageing Peels
Glycolic acid and low-strength blends smooth surface roughness and fine lines by encouraging renewal. They don't replace treatment for deeper wrinkles or pitted scars; for marks and scars, see our acne scar and mark treatment.
Hydrating Peels
Mild peels with lactic acid or other gentle ingredients refresh dull, dry skin with little irritation. They suit people who want a light exfoliation or who are new to peels.
Combination Peels
Acids can be blended in one session to address more than one concern, such as acne and uneven tone. We combine only what your skin can tolerate and usually introduce stronger steps gradually.
Patients often arrive with a name in mind. Here is what the common ones mean, so you can ask the right questions at any clinic.
Superficial, medium and deep. These describe depth. Superficial peels (glycolic, salicylic, mandelic, lactic) act on the top layer and heal in days. Medium peels, often using trichloroacetic acid (TCA), reach deeper and bring a longer recovery with swelling and crusting. Deep peels are done in a surgical setting, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
TCA peel. TCA is an acid used at different strengths. Low strengths are superficial and higher strengths are medium-depth, so ask exactly what strength is being applied.
Yellow peel. A peel based on retinol (vitamin A) with other ingredients, named for its colour. It is used for tone and texture and usually brings several days of dryness and peeling.
Cosmelan. A branded depigmenting treatment: a mask left on for a set time and then washed off at home, followed by a home cream. It is aimed at pigmentation, can cause strong irritation and peeling, and needs strict sun protection afterwards.
Which of these suits you is a medical decision based on your skin, so we confirm the formulations we use at the consultation. If you are weighing other options, see HydraFacial, our other medi-facials or the carbon peel facial, which work differently from a chemical peel.
Chemical peel cost in Pune isn't one price, because the peel and the number of sessions decide the fee. We confirm your fee in writing after the consultation, before any peel is done.
What changes the cost: the type and strength of the peel; the area treated (face only, or neck and other areas); the number of sessions in your course; and any home products or prescription items in the plan.
Ask any clinic for a written estimate that lists the peel, the number of sessions and whether aftercare products are included.

Aims to even tone and texture over a course of sessions
Chooses gentler acids and strengths for Indian skin tones where needed

Minimal to Moderate Downtime - Most people return to routine activities the same day after a superficial peel. Stronger peels need longer.
Redness and Peeling - Redness usually settles in a day or two. Flaking or peeling can last several days, up to about a week.
Sun Sensitivity - Peeled skin burns and darkens more easily, so strict sun protection is part of the plan.
Makeup - Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours, or longer if we advise it for your peel.
Avoid direct sun, tanning and heat for the period we advise, and apply sunscreen every morning
Don't pick, scratch or peel flaking skin
Use a gentle cleanser and a moisturiser
Pause retinol, exfoliating acids and other strong actives for the number of days we advise
Call the clinic if your skin is very red, blistered, weeping or darkening unexpectedly
No peel is risk-free. Common, expected effects are redness, a tight or stinging feeling, dryness and flaking. Less common effects are persistent redness, darker patches (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), lighter patches after stronger peels, infection and, rarely, scarring. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that these risks rise with sun exposure, picking at the skin and putting on makeup too early.
Deeper skin tones are more prone to dark marks after irritation, which is why we start gentler, see how your skin responds and space sessions out. Tell us if you tend to get dark marks, raised scars or cold sores, if you have recently used isotretinoin or had waxing, threading or laser on the area, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Any of these can change the plan or mean waiting.
If your skin reacts strongly after a peel, call the clinic on +91 8308669966 rather than waiting for it to settle.
