If creams and cleansers haven't worked, the product may not be the problem. Acne has different drivers: clogged pores, excess oil, bacteria, hormones, a damaged skin barrier, and sometimes medicines or habits. Each needs a different plan, and changing products every few days tends to make skin worse. The American Academy of Dermatology says switching products often, scrubbing, over-washing and picking can irritate acne-prone skin and worsen breakouts.
What causes acne. Acne forms when hair follicles clog with oil and dead skin cells. Bacteria in the clogged follicles can cause inflammation, which ranges from blackheads to deep, painful cysts.
Hormonal acne often appears on the lower face, jaw and chin and may flare before periods. Because the trigger is internal, creams alone often don't control it. Stress, skipping sunscreen, harsh cleansers and over-exfoliation can also make acne worse.
At The Skin Firm, we start with an assessment: what type of acne, what triggers it and what you've already tried. The plan comes after that conversation.
Whiteheads (closed clogged pores)
Blackheads (open clogged pores)
Small red, tender bumps (papules)
Pimples with pus (pustules)
Large, painful lumps under the skin (nodules)
Cysts filled with pus
Oily, shiny skin
Redness, swelling or inflammation
Dark spots or scars after breakouts
Comedonal: blackheads and whiteheads.
Inflammatory: papules and pustules.
Cystic and nodular acne. These can scar and often need a doctor's opinion.
Hormonal acne along the jaw and chin.
Body acne on the back and chest.
Acne with early marks or scarring. See our acne scar treatment page.
Dr. Karishma Singh, Founder and Skin & Aesthetic Specialist (BHMS, FCHD), leads treatment planning and procedures such as peels and facials. Dr. Monica C., Consultant Dermatologist (MD Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy; NMC-registered), assesses medical causes and prescribes medicines where they are needed.
The AAD advises seeing a dermatologist if acne causes cysts or nodules, which can leave scars, if non-prescription products haven't helped, or if acne is affecting how you feel. We tell you at the consultation if your acne needs medical treatment, and which of our options can support it.
Consultation & Skin Assessment
We assess your acne type and severity, triggers, skin type, products and medicines, and any hormonal pattern. If tests are needed, we tell you which and why.
Personalised Acne Plan
Your plan may combine prescription or non-prescription medicines, peels, medicated facials, LED or laser, and skincare. You get the likely timeline, risks and a written fee before you agree.
Treatment Sessions
In-clinic treatments are short and are paced to your skin. We explain how many sessions to expect and how far apart.
Aftercare & Review
You get written skincare and sun-protection advice. Acne treatments need weeks to show effect, so we review at set intervals and change what isn't working.
Medicines
Topical products such as benzoyl peroxide, retinoids or salicylic acid, and prescription medicines when a doctor advises them. Some medicines are not suitable in pregnancy.
Chemical Peels for Acne
Salicylic, mandelic or combination peels help unclog pores and fade marks. The type depends on your skin tone and how reactive your skin is. See our chemical peel page.
Medicated Facials
Clinical facials that clear congestion and support a medical plan. See our HydraFacial page for a device-based option.
LED Light Therapy
Blue and red light may reduce pimples. The AAD notes that visible light treats pimples only, not blackheads, whiteheads, cysts or nodules.
Laser Treatment for Acne
The AAD says lasers and lights can reduce acne but rarely clear it alone, so they are used with other treatment. Suitability is decided after assessment.
Combination Plans
Persistent or deeper acne usually responds better to a combined plan that is adjusted as your skin changes.
Identifies the type and trigger. So treatment fits the cause.
Gives a realistic timeline. Improvement from a working treatment often appears in 4 to 6 weeks, and clearing can take 2 to 3 months or longer, per the AAD.
Treats all acne-prone skin. Not just the visible spots.
Aims to prevent scars. Early treatment lowers the chance of scarring.
Checks for medicines and triggers. Including cosmetics and routines that may worsen acne.
Reviews and adjusts. The plan changes if your skin isn't responding.
Most in-clinic acne treatments have little downtime. This depends on the procedure.
Peeling or flaking can occur for two to five days after peels.
Mild redness, stinging or dryness is common and usually settles within a day or two.
Sun protection is needed, because treated skin is more sensitive.
Don't touch, pick or pop your skin.
Use a gentle, non-exfoliating cleanser for the days we advise, and don't scrub.
Apply sunscreen daily to avoid dark marks.
Skip heavy workouts and saunas for 24 hours after treatments, if advised.
Pause retinoids and strong actives for the days we advise.
Use your prescribed medicines as directed, and keep using them after your skin clears, if your doctor says so.
The AAD advises giving an acne treatment at least 4 weeks before judging it. Improvement from a treatment that is working often appears within 4 to 6 weeks, and clearing can take 2 to 3 months or longer. Treatment is often continued after skin clears to help prevent new breakouts.
Results vary from person to person and cannot be promised. If your acne is severe or leaving marks, tell us early, as that may need a different plan.
The cost of acne treatment in Pune depends on the type and severity of acne, the treatments advised (medicines, peels, facials, light or laser), the number of sessions and review visits, and any tests.
We don't work from a fixed price list. After your assessment you receive the recommended plan and a written fee, so you can decide at your own pace.
Acne treatments can cause dryness, redness, peeling, stinging and sun sensitivity. Peels and lasers can rarely cause burns, blisters or colour changes, as the AAD notes for lasers, and darker skin has a higher risk of dark marks. Some prescription acne medicines are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so tell us if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
Always tell us about every product and medicine you use, including those from elsewhere. Severe acne, deep cysts and sudden flares need a doctor's assessment.
