Laser hair removal uses pulses of laser light to damage hair follicles so that less hair grows back. It is a hair reduction treatment: the American Academy of Dermatology says it is not permanent, that most people stay hair-free for months or years, and that regrowth tends to be finer and lighter.
It suits people tired of the cycle of shaving, waxing and ingrown hairs. At The Skin Firm, your session plan is set by your skin tone, hair colour and thickness, and the area being treated, after an assessment and a patch test.
The laser light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair and follicle, which turns to heat and damages the follicle. Follicles are only affected while they are in their growth phase, and not all of them are in that phase at once, so more than one session is needed.
The AAD says most people need 2 to 6 treatments, usually 4 to 6 weeks apart, and may notice 10% to 25% less hair after the first. Maintenance sessions may be needed as hair regrows. Results vary with hair colour, skin type and hormones. People describe the sensation as a warm pinprick or a snapped rubber band, and cooling on the device helps with comfort.
Darker skin has more melanin around the hair, so the laser energy can also be absorbed by the skin. The AAD notes that people with dark skin can be treated, but need extra precautions, because the risks of burns and of skin darkening or lightening are higher.
That is why the device, energy and spacing are chosen for your skin tone, and why we do a patch test before the full session. If you had laser elsewhere and developed marks, tell us, and we can reassess your skin before planning anything.

Your plan starts with an assessment of your skin type, hair colour and thickness, hormones, medicines, tanning and any tendency to scarring or cold sores. Dr. Karishma Singh, Founder and Skin & Aesthetic Specialist (BHMS, FCHD), plans your treatment. Dr. Monica C., Consultant Dermatologist (MD Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy; NMC-registered), is available for medical concerns such as hormonal hair growth, and prescriptions.
The AAD advises asking who will perform your treatment, how many people with your skin tone they have treated, how many sessions you will need and what the risks are. We are happy to answer all of this at your consultation.
Skin & Hair Assessment
We assess your skin type, hair thickness and growth pattern, medicines, tanning and any history of scarring or cold sores.
Patch Test & Preparation
A patch test shows how your skin responds at the planned settings. The area is cleaned and prepared for the session, and everyone in the room wears protective eyewear.
Laser Session
Pulses of laser light are delivered to the treatment area, with cooling to protect the skin. Small areas take minutes and larger areas can take an hour or more.
Aftercare & Review
You get written aftercare advice. We explain how many sessions to expect and how far apart, and review your skin before each session.
A reduction in hair, not a promise of removal. Hair usually grows back less densely, and finer and lighter.
Fewer ingrown hairs and razor bumps for many people. Results vary.
Settings chosen for your skin tone. Assessed with a patch test first.
Options for small areas and full body. The plan depends on the area.
Sessions that take minutes to an hour or more. Depending on the area.
A realistic schedule and fee up front. You hear the likely number of sessions before you begin.
Most people have little or no downtime and resume normal activities the same day.
Redness, warmth or swelling in the treated area is common and usually settles in one to three days.
The skin is more sun-sensitive after treatment, so strict sun protection is needed.
Treated hairs shed over the following one to three weeks. This is not new growth.
Keep treated skin out of direct sun, and avoid tanning beds and sunless tanners, as the AAD advises.
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher daily on treated areas.
A cool compress can ease discomfort. Skip hot showers, steam, saunas and heavy workouts for 24 hours.
Avoid waxing, threading and plucking between sessions. Shave only if we advise it.
Moisturise to keep the skin calm.
Call the clinic on +91 8308669966 if you see blisters, severe pain, spreading redness or signs of infection.
The AAD says most people need 2 to 6 treatments. The number for you depends on the area, your hair colour and thickness, and your hormones. Underarms and upper lip often respond faster, while hair driven by hormones, such as on the chin, may need more sessions.
Sessions are spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart, and your doctor decides when it is safe to continue. We estimate the number at your consultation and review it after each session. For a breakdown by body area, read our guide: how many sessions for laser hair removal.
Before: Avoid tanning, outdoors and indoors, and sunless tanners. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher daily, as the AAD advises. Shave the area as we instruct, and stop waxing, threading and plucking for the number of weeks we advise, as the laser needs the hair root. Tell us if you have a tendency to scar or form keloids, get cold sores, or have taken isotretinoin or other medicines.
During: The area is cleaned, eye protection is worn, and pulses are delivered through a cooled handpiece. Small areas take minutes and larger areas an hour or more.
After: Redness and warmth are common for a day or two. Keep the area out of the sun, avoid heat and heavy exercise for 24 hours, and follow the aftercare sheet.
The cost of laser hair removal in Pune depends on the area or areas treated, the size of the area, the number of sessions your hair and skin need, and whether you choose single sessions or a plan.
We don't work from a fixed price list. After your assessment you receive the recommended plan with the number of sessions and a written fee, so you can decide at your own pace. Ask what is included before you begin.
The AAD lists discomfort, swelling and redness as common effects that last one to three days. Rare effects include blisters, cold sore outbreaks, infection, scarring and skin lightening or darkening. The AAD warns that laser hair removal can be dangerous in inexperienced hands, and that some colour changes can be permanent, though most settle over time.
The risk is higher with a recent tan, darker skin treated at the wrong settings, or medicines that make the skin sensitive. Tell us if you are pregnant, take isotretinoin or have a skin infection, as we may advise waiting. Ask who will perform your treatment and about their experience with your skin tone before you begin.

Myth: One session removes hair for good. Reality: Hair reduction usually takes several sessions, because follicles are only affected in their growth phase, and maintenance may be needed.
Myth: The results are permanent. Reality: The AAD does not describe it as permanent. Most people stay hair-free for months or years, and regrowth is usually finer and lighter.
Myth: Darker Indian skin can't be treated. Reality: It can, with extra precautions, suitable settings and a patch test, because the risk of colour change is higher.
Myth: Laser hurts more than waxing. Reality: People describe warm pinpricks or a snapped rubber band, and cooling helps. Comfort varies from person to person.
Laser hair removal is not a single-visit treatment. Sessions are spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart so each one reaches follicles in their growth phase, and missing or delaying visits can mean a less even reduction.
